“INTERNET ONLY” STAIRLIFTS, IS IT WORTH THE RISK?

Many websites have popped up offering self-install stairlifts, or offering to sell you a stairlift and arrange installation by a local subcontractor. A word to the wise; don’t do it.

DANGEROUS
We spoke with one man who self-installed a stairlift he purchased on the web for his wife. Unfortunately, he made a critical mistake during the installation. As a result, the first time he rode the lift he was thrown off, slammed to the ground and suffered a broken shoulder. All this while trying to prepare for his wife’s return home from the hospital.

One of our manufacturers relayed an even more tragic story of self-install where a young child was seriously injured by a self-installed stairlift. A relative had self-installed the stairlift and failed to set up the safety sensors correctly. As a result, the child was seriously injured when his sister rode the lift as the young boy sat on the track. A correctly installed lift would have prevented this terrible accident by sensing the child in the path of the stairlift and stopping the lift before colliding with the boy.

INSTALLATION PROBLEMS
Not only are there safety issues with self-installed lifts, we receive countless phone calls from people who have bought self-install lifts on the web and suddenly found themselves overwhelmed by the poor instructions, or maybe they damaged the unit during installation, ordered the wrong lift for their needs, or are unable to get support from the website they bought the lift from.

These websites also offer a measurement and installation service by subcontractors. Problems here have been sloppy, untrained, and uninsured installers who show up ill prepared. One of our customers told us that their installer showed up in a beaten up old car and even asked to borrow tools!

Don’t take the risk of having a poorly trained uninsured installer in your house when our prices are only slightly more (sometimes we’re even less), always include a 2 year “Top To Bottom” Parts & Labor Warranty, 24/7 Repair Service, Lifetime Parts & Labor Drive Train Warranty, and professional installation by our own fully trained and insured employees.

SERVICE ISSUES
StairLifts have a motor and many moving parts. Should your “Internet Only” stair lift require repair service you may find yourself out of luck. Internet stair lift companies do not have local service representatives. They are just as their name implies…Websites. When it comes to service they may be able to give you a few names of subcontractors in your area and that’s it “Here’s the number…good luck”. Don’t be surprised if the repair cost $300-500 dollars and your lift is down for a week or more.

AEMA: THE ACCESSIBILITY EQUIPMENT MANUFACTURER'S ASSOCIATION
AEMA strongly recommends that stair lifts, chair lifts, and platform lifts be installed by "an experienced technician" and "does not support the concept of self-installation".  Read the AEMA position paper.

TOO EXPENSIVE
Internet stair lifts are too expensive. That’s right. The initial price may seem like a deal but read on to see why it’s not a good value…
